Routes Title

Mount Kenya Guides & Porters Safari Club has a number of organized trips and activities to suit practically everybody's needs (i.e. hikers, trekkers, climbers and wildlife watchers).

There are three main routes for approaching Mount Kenya: the NaroMoru Route, the Sirimon Route and the Chogoria Route. Although these are the most common routes, the guides of Mount Kenya Guides & Porters Safari Club know of other long forgotten routes up the mountain that are not so easy to find but are easily as beautiful as the others. You can ask the guides about these other trekking possibilities.

On the main routes there are organized trips from one day up to six, seven, eight or more days, depending on the clients' individual needs. Click on a link below to find an overview of what the different routes can include.

Naro Moru Link Sirimon Link Chogoria Link Traversing Link

The Naro Moru Route

The Naro Moru Route approaches the mountain from the west and is the quickest approach to the summit.

Moorland - One day-trip

This trip offers a drive up to Met Station from which one can hike to the Moorland. Here magnificent alpine plants can be enjoyed.

Two day-trip

The trip starts with a hike from the park entrance to the Met Station, where you will spend the night. The next day you will proceed to hike through the Moorland to the crest of Teleki Valley, for a splendid view of the park.

Point Lenana - Two day-trip

This trip offers a great opportunity to visitors with limited time to reach the third highest Peak of Mount Kenya (Point Lenana, 4985 m). Hiking begins at the Met Station and goes up to Mackinders Camp (4200 m) to spend the night. A pre-dawn ascent of the Peak is done followed by a trek down to the Met Station for pick-up the same day.

NB: only those physically fit and properly acclimatized to high altitudes should attempt this trip.

Point Lenana - Three day-trip

An easier way to reach Point Lenana (4985 m). The first day you spend acclimatizing by sleeping at the Met Station. The second day is a hike up to Mackinders Camp where you will spend the night. The third day contains a pre-dawn ascent of Point Lenana, a descent from Point Lenana with a short break at Mackinders Camp, and a further descent to the Met Station for a Pick up.

Point Lenana - Four day-trip

Offers options for those with additional interests, needs and time. Day one and two are similar to the three daytrip.

Day three is used for acclimatization before ascending Point Lenana. A hike to Two Tarn or Teleki Tarn is possible. On day four an ascent of Point Lenana is complete before going all the way down to the Met Station again. Another option is to make an ascent of Point Lenana on day three and then spend the night at Mackinders.

A so called circumnavigation trip is possible for those physically fit and used to high altitudes. This trip contains a pre-dawn ascent of Point Lenana on day three and continues past Kami Camp and Two Tarn back to Mackinders to spend the night. On day four you descend to the Met station for a pick up.

A Similar six day-trip with an option on sleeping at Hall Tarns on the Eastern side of the mountain is also available. Longer trips are possible depending on individual needs and interests.

The Sirimon Route

The Sirimon Route has the gentlest slope of all approach routes and is therefore perfect for beginners.

One-day trip

Two distinctive one day-trips can be made from this route, which is popular for its unique forest and the opportunity for viewing wildlife.

Lower Forest - One day-trip

Driving to the Park entrance, the hike starts from the Park entrance gate through the Gallery forest up to Old Moses Camp at an altitude of 3000 m. This is a favourite spot for ornithologists and offers an opportunity to see the Grevy Zebras in the forest.

Moorland - one day-trip

Drive to Old Moses Camp where the hike starts through the barrow towards Liki North Valley. Here the Moorland offers a gentle climb through fascinating vegetation with a chance of seeing the peaks.

Point Lenana - five, six and seven day trip

A five day-trip is similar to a four day-trip with an extra night at Liki North Valley on the second day. A six day-trip is similar to a five day-trip but includes an excursion to either the Austrian Hut or Hall Tarns (Mintos Hut) to spend the night. A seven day-trip is similar to a six day-trip but includes an extra night at Shiptons Camp.

The Chogoria Route

The Chogoria Route approaches the mountain on the Eastern side. This route contains luxurious vegetation combined with the fact that the final eruption of Mount Kenya occurred on this side of the mountain. This makes it one of the most scenic parts of the entire area.
